For a second year in a row, the Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) extended the pay freeze for county workers.

CSEA president Jerry Laricchiuta told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that some workers are only making $25,000 per year.

"As you know, home heating oil has gone up substantially. Gasoline has gone up substantially, which is going to result in higher utility bills," he said, noting that some workers have had to take second jobs to make ends meet. "They're struggling. They're doing the best they can. They've got child care issues. It's really unfortunate. The only answer that anybody has around here is to just keep taking from the union worker."

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said the plan with NIFA holds the line on taxes by cutting waste and reining in labor costs.
