N.Y. Woman Claims She Was Trampled During Garden State Plaza Mall Shooting
HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A lawsuit has been filed in connection with the November shooting at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus.
Richard Shoop, 20, of Teaneck walked through the mall with a rifle that had been modified to look like an AK-47, randomly firing shots before turning the gun on himself.
Alexandra DiMarco, 21, of Tappan, N.Y. has filed a lawsuit against the mall's owner saying she was trampled by shoppers fleeing the shooting and seriously injured.
"She's a very small-framed woman and she basically got swept up in the crowd while everybody was trying to flee the mall," DiMarco's attorney, Rosemarie Arnold, told 1010 WINS. "She fell, she broke her arm, causing her to need surgery."
DiMarco claims security at the mall was lacking and is suing Westfield Garden State Plaza.
"Where was the guy watching the video camera? Didn't anybody at any point say, 'Hey, wake up, there's a guy walking through the mall, wearing a helmet and carrying a very large rifle?'" Arnold said.
The lawsuit also names Shoop's estate and his older brother, who owned the weapon used in the shooting, as defendants.
The suit seeks unspecified damages.
Westfield Garden State Plaza has not commented.
