N.Y. Town Considers Fines For Snow Dumped On Streets
MAMARONECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A suburban New York village is considering imposing fines on people who dump snow into the street.
Mamaroneck officials said snow shoveled, blown or thrown into the street blocks emergency routes and creates driving hazards.
They're considering fines as one of several measures to regulate where snow can be dumped in the Westchester County community.
Village Manager Richard Slingerland told the Journal News that some residents this winter plowed mounds of snow into the street, making them "impassable.''
Officials suggest residents shovel or plow snow onto their lawns or on top of plowed mounds along the curb.
The village also is considering charging the tax bills of businesses and residents who routinely fail to clear their sidewalks.
