N.J. Transit Riders Told To Expect Delays
NEWARK, N.J. (CBS 2) -- There is warning for New Jersey commuters Friday morning.
NJ Transit says passengers should expect delays throughout the Northeast corridor for the next 10 days – not exactly happy news during a summer filled with slowdowns.
That's right. After a nightmarish summer of commuting, it's only going to get worse.
Beginning on Friday, Amtrak is shutting down one of its four lines into New York as the company completes railroad tie replacement work.
NJ Transit officials are warning those who use the North jersey Coast, Northeast Corridor, Raritan Valley and Midtown Direct lines to be prepared for at least 10 minute delays until Aug. 30.
The latest round comes during a frustrating summer for commuters, where in July alone there were 12 incidents that led to major service disruptions, compared to just three in 2009. Officials admitted nearly one if eight trains were late by six or more minutes – the worst record in three years.
"That's frustrating,"said commuter Kenisha Birchett of Irvington, N.J. "It really is."
Just last week, a 70 foot tree toppled in Hamilton, sparking four hour delays during the morning rush hour. Other problems have ranged from overheated engines to overhead wires and everything in between.
