N.J. Officials: Spending Hit Record High In Last Month's Elections
NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork/AP) – Spending during New Jersey's state elections last month hit an all-time high, according to state election law officials.
A preliminary report made public Thursday by the state Election Law Enforcement Commission said total spending was $124 million.
Independent groups spent a record high of nearly $41 million on elections across the state.
Since both Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic challenger Barbara Buono accepted public funding as well as spending caps, the spending in their race ended at $21 million. The figure is only about a quarter of what was spent in the 2005 gubernatorial race.
The election commission also reported that the ballot question on minimum wage attracted record spending at nearly $3 million. Even adjusted for inflation, it ranked third highest in New Jersey history.
