N.J. Man Gets 15 Years For Sexually Assaulting 6-Year-Old Girl
IRVINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.
Jean Joseph, 39, of Irvington, N.J., was sentenced late last week by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Michael L. Ravin, after being convicted on July 19 of first-degree aggravated assault, second-degree sexual contact, and two counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, according to Essex County prosecutors.
In April 2010, Joseph's mother was babysitting the 6-year-old girl, who had just arrived in the United States from Haiti, when the assault occurred, prosecutors said. At the time, Joseph was unemployed and living with his mother, and she had gone out to run an errand.
When he was alone in the house with the little girl, Joseph took her into a secluded bedroom and demanded that she kiss his genitals, prosecutors said.
Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Tara Creegan said Joseph never showed any remorse, and actually even accused the 6-year-old girl of being promiscuous.
Joseph must serve 80 percent of his sentence, and will be subject to a lifelong requirement to register as a sex offender.
