N.J. Code Enforcer Charged With Making Up Carjacking, Buying Drugs
EAST ORANGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A code enforcer for the City of East Orange, N.J., has been charged with falsely telling police that he was carjacked to cover up a drug deal.
David McCord, 60, of Vauxhall, N.J., was charged filing a false police report, in connection with a Saturday incident that Essex County prosecutors said he made up.
McCord told police he had been carjacked at 189 Oak St. in East Orange, according to prosecutors. He was interviewed by prosecutors about the alleged carjacking on Monday, and prosecutors said it became clear that McCord was really out buying drugs when a local drug dealer stole his 2007 Hyundai.
In addition to the false reporting charges, McCord was also charged with wandering with intent to purchase narcotics, prosecutors said. He also had outstanding unrelated warrants from Newark and Maplewood municipal courts, prosecutors said.
McCord will answer to the latest charges in East Orange and Newark Municipal Court.
