Music Fans Flock To Hard Rock Cafe For Memorabilia Auction
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Saturday offered a rare chance for music fanatics to snag items used by some of the world's most famous musicians.
An international auction took place in Times Square, featuring items you're sure to recognize.
As CBS 2's Janelle Burrell reported, an iconic guitar played by both John Lennon and George Harrison was one of the famed pieces up for sale.
"It was used on the recording of I Want To Hold Your Hand, and This Boy. Also on very important TV shows in the UK before they came here to America in 1964," said Martin Nolan, with Julien's Auction.
The legendary 1962 Rickenbacker guitar was one of hundreds of pieces from iconic musicians being auctioned at the Hard Rock Cafe.
From one of Michael Jackson's trademark jackets, to outfits rocked by Elvis, Rhianna, and Katy Perry -- all of it was up for grabs.
"People are bidding all over the world right now online. Here in the room at the Hard Rock Cafe and also, they're bidding by phone," Nolan said.
"I'm targeting a lot of pieces, but I'm going to keep it a secret until I see what's happening live," said Jerry Fraize, director of Hard Rock Cafe's memorabilia collection.
Fraize was among the people bidding in person.
"It's fun. You kind of pretend you're doing it for yourself and get your adrenaline going," he said.
"A huge amount of interest worldwide with people wanting to take away this really important piece of pop culture history," Nolan said.
The Beatles' 1962 Rickenbacker guitar auctioned off for $657,000, quite a bit more than what experts had predicted.
