MTA To Install Surveillance Cameras On Subways To Combat Sexual Assaults, Lewdness
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – To prevent sexual lewdness and sexual assaults on subways, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it will be installing surveillance cameras on a new fleet of subway cars, hopefully to be ordered in the next 2015-2019 capital plan.
The MTA says no cameras will be installed on current cars.
With improvements the MTA is doing this week to combat sexual lewdness and assaults on the subway, public advocate Letitia James says the message is clear.
"Violence and harassment will not be tolerated anywhere in our city; from our streets to our schools," James told 1010 WINS.
James also said a new banner will go live on the MTA homepage this week with links to information regarding sexual assault as well as safety tips.
"For the first time, subway maps will be updated to identify subway stations with NYPD transit precincts so all customers can know where to get help," James added.
