MTA To Test Subway With All Cars Connected In One Long, Open Design

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The MTA announced plans to test new subway cars with an open model design.

New York City commuters are well-accustomed to the often ugly scene of riders pushing to get in and out of crowded subway cars. MTA Spokesman Kevin Ortiz says open model trains could reduce the inconvenience officially known as "dwell time."

"The amount of time it takes a train to get to a station, passengers board, passengers exit - that process could be sped up by this design," Ortiz told WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini.

Ortiz says the design would look similar to what some refer to as the MTA's "accordion-style" buses, which consist of one segmented car with no doors dividing up the inside. The newest model would be an effort to boost passenger capacity.

Officials said the MTA plans to test two prototypes when it orders its next round of cars in 2017.
