MTA Expanding Quiet Car Program On Metro-North, LIRR
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The MTA is expanding its quiet car program on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North trains.
Far Rockaway, Hempstead, Long Beach and West Hempstead branches will be designated quiet cars.

For Metro-North trains, all inbound and outbound rush hour trains will now have quiet cars. That means the last car on all morning peak trains and the first car on all evening peak trains are now designated as quiet cars.

When one Metro-North rider was asked by WCBS 880 reporter Paul Murnane if he had ever availed himself of the quiet car, he had a rather interesting response.
"I did it once by mistake," he said. "I thought somebody died."
If seated in a quiet car, passengers are asked not to talk on cell phones, to turn off the sound on any electronic devices and conversation must be subdued.
"Things that have audio, you have to use an earplug and the volume has to be turned down so much that it doesn't bleed out and bother other people. But the quiet car does not ban electronic devices. It just asks that you use them very quietly," said Metro-North spokesperson Margie Anders said last month.
