16 Hurt When MTA Bus Crashes Into Brooklyn Building
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An MTA bus crashed into a building in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon.
It happened at Lincoln Road at Bedford Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens at around 1:55 p.m.
As CBS2's Jessica Layton reported, the FDNY and the owner of the building have a real mess on their hands. The MTA bus that crashed was still stuck during the early evening hours and wasn't expected to be moved until Tuesday.
In all, 16 people on the bus were hurt, but all of the injuries were described as non life-threatening, which is amazing when you consider how bad the accident could have been.
Authorities don't think the 55-year-old driver with 13 years on the job was speeding, but still don't know exactly what caused him to swerve, lose control and cause such damage to 174 Lincoln Road.
CBS2 spoke to a good Samaritan who got out of his car and rushed to help.
"We had to yank the door open and we helped get people off the bus," Prentis Mitchell said. "Everybody was shocked. Everybody wanted to get off the bus."
"They self-evacuated from the bus or they were assisted off by the Fire Department members," FDNY Deputy Chief James Smithwick said. "We went through the building to make sure nobody was trapped inside under the debris."
Department of Buildings inspectors were on scene early Monday evening and said they would be inspecting every inch of the building, adding everyone inside the building was evacuated and offered a place to stay.
Most of the injured were treated at the scene.
