Mother Recalls Horrifying Experience With Out-Of-Control Cab In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A mother in the Bronx was recalling some scary moments Wednesday, after she saved her 8-month-old daughter from the path of an out-of-control livery cab.
As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, Alondra Gervicio, 17, is the mother of a happy and healthy girl named Perla. Gervicio's daughter's natural cries were a sweet sound Wednesday, after a horrifying crash Tuesday afternoon could have brought far more painful tears.
Gervicio said she does not remember much about the moments right before a livery cab hit her and her daughter as she walked along Prospect Avenue in the Bronx, on the way to school to take a test.
"I didn't feel the pain when the car hit me," Gervicio said. "I was like, I stand up, and then I was looking for her, then I saw her under, and I was so scared."
A livery cab driver had lost control of his vehicle, which jumped the curb and crashed into the front of a Dunkin' Donuts.
Perla fell out of her stroller upon the impact, and ended up underneath the cab. The stroller was crushed, but the little girl was alive.
"I was screaming for the ambulance to come," Gervicio said. "It was so horrible."
On Wednesday afternoon, Gervicio and her baby returned to their home in the Bronx, still very shaken up. They had been at Lincoln Medical Center overnight for observation.
"I'm scared," she said. "I'm scared now that that happened to us."
Though Gervicio said she is now nervous to walk with her daughter on the street, she is just thankful that they're alive.
The 68-year-old driver of the livery cab was pronounced dead at the scene. He apparently had suffered a heart attack.
Before hitting the building, the driver hit another car, but no one inside was hurt.
No customers were in the Dunkin' Donuts store at the time of the incident.
