Morristown Teen Bringing 'Sidewalk Smiles' To Faces Of 'Beautiful' Strangers
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- You are beautiful.
That's the message Julia Kubin, a 13-year-old Morristown girl, is on a mission to spread.
As CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported, for a couple of hours once a week, usually on Sundays, the eighth-grader can be found on street corners in her hometown holding up signs targeting pedestrians and drivers -- total strangers -- with her message about beauty.
Julia calls what she does "Sidewalk Smiles."
It doesn't matter if you're young or old, tall or small.
"Beauty is anything that you are," Julia said.
The teen has been spreading her message for the past couple of months, inspired by the simple premise of doing something nice for others.
"I want to better the community through random acts of kindness," said Julia, an honor student at Frelinghuysen Middle School and a black belt in tae kwon do.
The story of Sidewalk Smiles has resonated on social media. She has 230 followers on Twitter and 854 likes on Facebook, where she writes about the inner beauty she says we all possess.
"It's amazing that somebody wants to share that with everybody else," one teenage girl told Rapoport.
"Makes you feel good inside," added another.
People all over are inspired by Julia's positive approach to life, especially her mom, who accompanies her whenever she takes to the streets.
"I think it's more than just 'you're beautiful,'" mom Jill Kubin said. "I think it's somebody taking the time out to tell them that. And it's somebody pointing out a message that maybe they don't hear every day."
