More Than 2,000 Long Island Homes Uninhabitable After Sandy
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- More than 2,000 Long Island homes were destroyed or left uninhabitable by Superstorm Sandy and officials said that number may grow.
Nassau County was hit harder than Suffolk, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported. The Town of Hempstead suffered the most damage with more than 1,000 residences destroyed.

Displaced residents continue to struggle to return to a sense of normalcy. Many have been making the best of the situation in places like the Red Cross shelter at Nassau Community College.
"I'm hoping to get out of here to go home as soon as possible," Bob Egan, of Long Beach, said.
"We all came here and it's been excellent, these people are excellent. Thank God for them," storm victim Vincent Molly said.
Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo requested nearly $8.4 billion in federal aid for Long Island, including housing funding, to cover the cost of the storm.
More than 71,000 households in Nassau and over 26,000 in Suffolk have applied for FEMA help.
