Monroe Township, N.J., Man Accused Of Killing His Own Father
MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Neighbors in the area were on edge Wednesday night after a man was accused of murdering his own father.
Monroe Township police were spending their seventh straight night Wednesday night in front of the home on South Rhoda Street where prosecutors said Andrew Grossman, 37, beat his 65-year-old father, Ronald, to death, CBS 2's Jessica Schneider reported.
"It's very sad, upsetting to hear," said a man who has been the family's neighbor for two years.
The man did not want to reveal his name, but said Andrew Grossman has always acted oddly. Sources told CBS 2 that Grossman is a diagnosed schizophrenic, and was staying with his father after being released from a treatment facility.
"Just walking around the perimeter of his house, he would go up and down the block; just do weird things," the neighbor said. "I have a niece and nephew I live with and I worry. I worry about them now."
Sources told CBS 2 that police discovered Ronald Grossman's body under a tarp in the garage around 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Friends had reported Ronald Grossman missing days earlier. And while police came to the home over the course of several days beginning last Thursday, they did not get a search warrant until Tuesday night.
Later Wednesday, they arrested Andrew Grossman on charges of evidence tampering and hindering the investigation into his father's death. But just hours later, prosecutors added a murder charge when an autopsy revealed Ronald Grossman suffered back, neck and head injuries, and died from blunt force trauma, CBS 2's Schneider reported.
"I'll feel better when he gets sent away, if he gets sent away," the neighbor said.
Andrew Grossman was being held on $1 million bail Wednesday night. Meanwhile, police were still guarding the home since the investigation was ongoing.
