Monroe College Student Rescued From Icy Waters In New Rochelle
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 20-year-old Monroe College college student is recovering after being rescued from the icy waters near a Westchester County marina.
The student was sitting on a sea wall listening to music at the Hudson Park Road marina in New Rochelle early Friday morning when he slipped on ice and fell in, police said.
"Apparently he was in the water for about 15 minutes trying to get up the wall and calling for help," New Rochelle Police Capt. Joseph Shaller told 1010 WINS. "Fortunately for him some neighbors in the area did hear his screams for help and alerted us."
When police arrived at the scene they found the student chest-deep in the water.
Shaller said the student was suffering from hypothermia when he was brought to a hospital.
The student is expected to be released from the hospital later Friday.
