MoMa To Revamp Space With $400 Million Expansion Plan
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City's Museum of Modern Art has unveiled a revised expansion plan.
MoMa announced a preliminary design two years ago. The new plan was made public Tuesday.
The work will add about 50,000 square feet of exhibition space, enhance galleries and replace a 1939 staircase that was removed. A plan to build a new entrance to its sculpture garden has been scrapped.
There will be a reconfigured lobby to address overcrowding.
"We have been working closely with the architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with executive architects Gensler, to refine plans for The Museum of Modern Art's renovation and expansion," the museum said in the announcement. "We are making a number of changes to some existing spaces, and the end result will be an overall gallery space increase of 30 percent."
The street-level museum store will be moved downstairs. Second-floor retail space will also be added next to the museum cafe.
The three-phase, $400 million project is expected to be completed in 2019 or 2020.
The museum will remain open throughout the construction. The first phase starts next week.
