Modified LIRR Service Back After Nor'easter Causes Rough Evening Commute
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Long Island Rail Road is running for the morning rush after a rough evening commute.
Modified service resumed Thursday morning after trains out of Penn Station were cancelled Wednesday night. Spokesman Sal Arena said trains were back on track by 5 a.m. Thursday except for the Long Beach branch, which remains suspended.

Penn Station had to be closed Wednesday night due to overcrowding. No new passengers were being allowed in until service out of Penn Station resumed. Some of those already inside were left stranded for up to 90 minutes.

"Most of the people working the booths in Penn Station said they had no idea what was going on," said commuter Adam Coven. "They were waiting for us to tell them."

"We're here trying to find a cab to get home," said commuter Anabella Shaw. "Finding other people going to the same place, so we're carpooling."
The area's transportation system already suffered damage after Superstorm Sandy slammed the entire region.
"We only have two of four tunnels operating getting into and out of Penn Station," said Joe Calderone with the LIRR.
The LIRR said there may still be residual weather-related problems Thursday, so customers are being advised to listen to station announcements for train information and use caution when entering and exiting trains and on station platforms and stairs.
