Mob Turncoat, Admitted Killer To Be Sentenced

NEW YORK (AP) -- A former mob underboss faces sentencing years after his turncoat testimony helped prosecutors win convictions against dozens of mob associates.

Salvatore Vitale is scheduled for sentencing on Friday afternoon in New York City.

Vitale has admitted to 11 killings between 1976 and 1999. He pleaded guilty in April 2003 to racketeering conspiracy and murder in aid of racketeering.

But prosecutors are recommending less than a life term for the former Bonanno crime family leader. The government says his cooperation was extraordinary.
