MLB To Honor Mariano Rivera Before World Series Game 2
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Mariano Rivera will receive the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award before Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night.
The New York Yankees closer, who retired after the regular season, will be recognized on the field by Commissioner Bud Selig during pregame ceremonies. His wife and three sons will also be present, according to MLB.com.
The award last was presented in 2011 to Ken Griffey Jr. It recognizes achievements and contributions of historical significance.
Rivera's blurb on MLB's official website for the award reads, "Perhaps the greatest relief pitcher in Major League history, Mariano Rivera closed out a remarkable 19-year career -- spent entirely in Yankees pinstripes -- in 2013 as the game's all-time saves leader with 652. His lifetime 2.21 ERA ranks 13th all-time, and he owned a spectacular 0.70 ERA in 96 postseason appearances. Rivera will receive the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award in recognition of his prolific career."
Past honorees are Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Roberto Clemente, Tony Gwynn, Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, Cal Ripken Jr., Rachel Robinson, Sammy Sosa, Ichiro Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners.
