MLB Fan Cave Hosts Rock Band Sublime For Intimate Performance In Greenwich Village

By Kelly Williams

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A California-based band known for contributing much to the soundtrack of the '90s was in New York Wednesday night at an event put on for a select group of lucky baseball fans in Greenwich Village.

Alternative rockers Sublime (now known as Sublime with Rome, with the addition of a new member) appeared at the MLB Fan Cave, an immersive fan experience built this year, which serves as the hub for the winners of the MLB "Dream Job" contest and several special guests.

The winners of the MLB Dream Job work in the Fan Cave every day for the entire 2011 baseball season, where they watch all 2,430 regular season games plus every Postseason game. They then chronicle their experiences and share their viewpoints on baseball and pop culture through Facebook, Twitter, MLBFanCave.com, and regular appearances on MLB Network.

Wednesday night, fans were treated to an intimate acoustic performance by the band, after checking out the interactive activities throughout the space.

The Fan Cave hosts regular visits from MLB players, baseball personalities and celebrities. So far this season around 12 performances have happened and over 50 players, hall-of-famers and celebs have stopped by.

The modern space features unique baseball memorabilia and decor including a gumball portrait of Jay-Z and a large "Willie" sculpture of Willie Mays' iconic World Series catch.

The acoustic performance featured music from the band's new album "Yours Truly" and some classic Sublime favorites. Yankee, Mets, and even some Phillies fans rocked to the soulful and laid-back sounds of "Take it or Leave it," "PCH," and sang along with 1997 chart topper "Wrong Way."

The relaxed Los Angeles band showcased a passionate West coast sound but also struck a strong New York chord.

"We're so happy to see your guys' faces," said lead singer Rome Ramirez. "It's straight up New York style."

The band comes to New York often with nearly six Tri-State area performances in the last two years.

Their new single, "Take it or Leave it" even featured lyrics about the Big Apple.

Ramirez had never been to New York City before joining the band and the felt the city was full of opportunity.

"People work hard and we're all about working hard, it's a place to start over."

Bassist Eric Wilson recalled playing a show in New York the week after the Sept. 11 attacks and the moving experience of his FDNY firefighter friend coming on stage for a bagpipe tribute to his fallen colleagues.

"It was a way for people to honor and not forget what happened to them."
