Midwood Residents Say National Grid Left Their Neighborhood A Mess And Never Cleaned Up
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Residents in the Midwood section of Brooklyn are dealing with piles of gravel, uneven sidewalks, and holes in the ground thanks to a National Grid service repair.
Neighbors along a stretch of East 2nd Street in Midwood can't believe what their sidewalks look like.
"People walking at night, it's dangerous for old people, carriages, and children. It's not a safe environment," Philomena Meringolo, 90, told CBS 2's Emily Smith.
Meringolo said that she doesn't even like to walk around her neighborhood anymore thanks to layers of pavement and gravel that were left behind after a winter gas main project.
Residents had been told that the project, which began in February, would be cleared within 21 days.
In the letter, National Grid said that the demand for gas necessitated the upgrade so that service would be reliable. Neighbors said that service hasn't been a problem, but the mess is.
A strip of raised black pavement in the middle of concrete goes all the way down the block and comes complete with pebbles and dust.
The corner is marked by holes in the ground and left over construction cones.
"They say they will remove it and put new cement down, but we're still waiting for it," local business owner John Pasiakos said.
Pasiakos and other worry that someone is going to get hurt before a new sidewalk is in place.
When reached for a comment a National Grid spokesperson said that the company was preparing a statement.
