NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One of two men suspected in a string of bank robberies was arrested Thursday following a chaotic scene in Midtown Manhattan.

The suspect was caught apparently trying to flee on foot through the Lincoln Tunnel.

A green Ford wound up on the sidewalk at West 31st Street and 9th Avenue around 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses said that car was being chased by another car apparently driven by undercover cops when it jumped the curb.

As CBS 2's Don Champion reported, the green Ford drove on the sidewalk for several hundred feet before it stalled.

"I just heard a bunch of people yelling 'get out of the way, get out of the way,'" one witness told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman.

The car scraped against the side of the Dunkin Donuts at West 31st and 9th Avenue with all of its tires flat.

A witness said two men jumped out of the Ford and fled on foot towards the Lincoln Tunnel.

"Exited the car and just took off down 31st towards the river," said the witness. "A cop came up and followed him with a gun, chasing him down there. It was pretty scary."

According to police, the two men are suspected in a handful of Midtown bank robberies that occurred Thursday.

One of the suspects was arrested by a Port Authority police officer on the approach road to the tunnel, Silverman reported.

The other suspect remains at large.
