Middle-Aged Woman Kills Her Elderly Mother, Then Herself In Dilapidated Stamford House
STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - The bodies of a mother and her daughter were found just after 1 p.m. on Friday following a murder-suicide in Stamford, police said.
Police were called to the home on Long Ridge Road by neighbors who were concerned about the two women living together. Stamford Police Chief Robert Nivakoff said that when police arrived at the house, they found the front and rear doors bolted shut.

"The police officers responding got a ladder and made entry through the second-floor window, where they discovered two deceased persons," Nivakoff explained.
Police said that it was a terribly sad situation, as the elderly woman and her daughter were living in financial distress without any utilities, electricity or water. They were said to be living off food donated by neighbors.
"The mother had suffered from Alzheimer's," Nivakoff told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau. "And it's our understanding that the daughter had somewhat diminished capacity."
Nivakoff said that the daughter, 57-year-old Susan Beran, shot her 85-year-old mother, Florence, in the head and then took her own life.
The rundown house had been sold, and the unfortunate irony is that the two women were to receive more than $200,000 from the sale of the house. But because the two women were so reclusive, officials were unable to contact them.
