Mets To Honor Gary Carter On Opening Day; Family Gets Ceremonial First Pitch
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — The Mets will honor the memory of former star Gary Carter with a pregame ceremony on Opening Day.
Carter's family will take part in the tribute on April 5 at Citi Field before the Mets play the Atlanta Braves.
"We are thrilled that the Carters will be with us," Jeff Wilpon, the team's COO, said in a statement. "Mets fans will have the chance to pay their respects and remember all of his accomplishments."
Carter's wife, Sandy, said "it will be an incredible experience" to celebrate his legacy by having the family throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
"The Mets and the fans of New York always had a special place in Gary's heart and that admiration will live on in our hearts for years to come," she said. "Thanks to the Wilpon family and the entire Mets organization for making this possible."
There also will be a moment of silence for Carter.
Carter died Feb. 16 in Florida at the age of 57. The Hall of Famer catcher helped lead the Mets to the 1986 World Series championship.
The Mets are wearing a patch on their right sleeves featuring Carter's nickname of "Kid" and his number 8.
