Mets Place Ruben Tejada On DL With Strained Right Quad
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Ruben Tejada to the minor leagues?
Not so fast. He's headed to the disabled list with a right quadriceps strain, the New York Mets announced Thursday.
After being warned -- along with Ike Davis -- that he was teetering on the edge of a demotion, the shortstop picked up a hit Wednesday but limped off the field in the ninth inning.
Tejada didn't think his quad was "too bad" after hurting it running after popup late in the Mets' Subway Series victory over the Yankees.
"He thought he could actually maybe catch it," manager Terry Collins said after the 9-4 win. "But ... he felt his leg starting to pull on him, so he slid. And the (next) ground ball, you could tell obviously something was wrong."
Tejada has one hit in his last 17 at-bats and is averaging just .209.
The Mets called up shortstop Omar Quintanilla to replace Tejada. Quintanilla is batting .333 with a .419 on-base percentage in 47 games for Triple-A Las Vegas.
"I have to concentrate on my job," Tejada said Wednesday. "I have to get better every day and go play hard every day."
Tejada spent a good chunk of the season on the DL in 2012 with a strained right quad.
"I don't think it is as bad as last year," he said.
