Metropolitan Opera Reaches Labor Deal With Stagehands
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Metropolitan Opera has reached more labor agreements and said it expects to avert a lockout by reaching agreements with the remaining unions as well.
The Met said it reached an agreement with the stagehands early Wednesday.
The opera house is still in negotiations with eight smaller unions, including those representing painters and costume and makeup artists.
On Monday it reached tentative labor deals with the Local 802 of the musicians' union and the American Guild of Musical Artists.
The Met said rehearsals will continue and the season is still expected to open as scheduled Sept. 22.
The contract disputes began after management had demanded salary cuts of about 17 percent and threatened to lock workers out if they did not agree.
The terms of the agreement with the stagehands were not disclosed. Published reports said deals reached earlier with the Met's orchestra and singers included concessions by both sides.
All of the agreements must be ratified by union members.
