Metro-North Service Plans & Tips For New Haven Line Commuters
HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two commuter trains collided just outside Bridgeport, Conn., on Friday evening, damaging the tracks and snarling travel in the Northeast.
Here's a look at what commuters can expect for the next few days:
Morning and Evening Peak/Off-Peak Service
- For the AM/PM Peak, there will be limited train service between Grand Central Terminal and the Westport Station.
- For the Off-Peak, there will be regular train service between Grand Central Terminal and the Westport Station.
- There will be loop bus service with connections between Bridgeport, Fairfield, Fairfield Metro and Westport Stations (no bus service from Green's Farms and Southport Stations).
- A train shuttle will operate approximately every 20 minutes between Bridgeport and New Haven Stations.
Evening Peak Service to New Haven
- There will be regular train service from Grand Central Terminal to the South Norwalk Station.
- Express bus service from South Norwalk to the Bridgeport Station will be available.
- There will be limited train service from Grand Central Terminal to the Westport Station.
- Local bus shuttle service will run between Westport, Fairfield, Fairfield Metro and Bridgeport Stations (no bus service from Green's Farms and Southport Stations).
- A train shuttle will operate every 20 minutes between Bridgeport and New Haven Stations.
- Regular train service will operate on New Canaan, Danbury and Waterbury Branches.
Amtrak Service
- Amtrak says its Acela Express and Northeast Regional Service between New York and New Haven are indefinitely suspended.
- Amtrak will provide limited service between Boston and New Haven.
Tuesday:
- Morning Peak Trains to Grand Central
- A shuttle train will operate every 20 minutes between New Haven and Bridgeport Station.
- Between Bridgeport and Stamford stations, two bus shuttles will operate: Express service from Bridgeport to Stamford Station with regular train connections to Grand Central Terminal. Local service between Bridgeport, Fairfield Metro, Fairfield and Westport Stations (no bus service from Green's Farms and Southport Stations).
- There will be limited train service from Westport and East Norwalk Stations to Grand Central and regular train service from South Norwalk Station to Grand Central Terminal.
Conn. Gov. Dannel Malloy said roads could be a mess for a week as Metro-North Railroad crews repair tracks, overhead wires and other equipment. Officials are expecting heavy congestion along Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway as a result.
EXTRA: Check Traffic
Each day, approximately 30,000 Metro-North customers use the stations where service has been shut down, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates Metro-North.
In a statement, Metro-North made the following recommendations to commuters:
- Travel times will be significantly longer than normal and trains will be significantly crowded.
- Metro-North representatives will be at major New Haven Line (NHL) stations to assist customers.
- NHL customers east of South Norwalk are encouraged to seek alternative ways to get to and from work or stagger their work schedule.
- If possible, customers are advised to use the Harlem Line as an alternative. NHL rail tickets will be cross-honored.
- ConnDOT will cross-honor NHL pre-paid rail tickets (as a temporary Bus/Rail uniticket) on I-95 Corridor Bus Service.
- Metro-North will cross-honor Amtrak tickets.
