Mercedes' Departure From Montvale Adds To Calls To Lower NJ Taxes
MONTVALE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Some New Jersey Republican leaders are renewing their call to lower taxes after Mercedes-Benz's announcement this week that it's moving its headquarters to Atlanta.
Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi, whose district includes Montvale, where Mercedes has its offices, says the state's incentives for businesses to move or stay here are helping cities but are not doing as much for Bergen County.
She says there need to be bigger changes to the tax system to keep companies from moving.
Gov. Chris Christie's spokesman made similar comments Tuesday after Mercedes announced it was putting its headquarters in Atlanta.
Mercedes pays nearly $1 million in property taxes and is Montvale's second-biggest private employer behind KPMG.
The company's 37-acre corporate campus in Montvale employs about 1,000 people.
Bergen County, next to New York City, has the highest property tax bills in the state. But it gets back far less than most counties in school aid.
