'Meeting Bowls' Bring People Together In Times Square

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- If you're looking for an intimate setting to sit and chat in the middle of the Crossroads of the World, then you're in luck.

Some new creative street furniture is making its debut in Times Square. They're called "meeting bowls," 5-foot-tall capsules that seat up to eight people.

The works of art are intended to get passersby to sit, stop and chat with strangers to create "a sense of community in a large city."

There are three "meeting bowls'' on display that will also prompt people to record and share dialogue with smartphones or laptops.

It's bound to be a moving experience. The structures gently rock as people step in and out.

The "meeting bowls" were created by mmmm, a collaboration of Alberto Alarcón, Emilio Alarcón, Ciro Márquez and Eva Salmerón from Madrid, Spain.

It's all part of  Times Square Arts, a project by the Times Square Alliance to bring public art to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city.

The "meeting bowls" can be seen and visited at Broadway and 46th Street and will be in Times Square through September 16.
