ME: Possible Human Remains Found In World Trade Center Debris
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Medical Examiner's Office said that it continues to work to identify as many victims of 9/11 as possible following a newly launched sifting operation on Staten Island.
On Tuesday, the ME's Office confirmed to CBSNewYork.com that two new potential human remains were recovered on Monday.
Last Friday, officials announced that the ME's Office and other city agencies, including police, fire and sanitation departments, would take part in a 10-week operation at the Fresh Kills park area.
Workers are expected to sift through nearly 600 cubic yards of construction debris from the World Trade Center site.
The last time the city did a comprehensive sifting of debris was in 2010.
Since 2006, the remains of 34 previously unrecovered victims were identified through DNA.
Of the 2,752 victims killed at the World Trade Center site -- previously known as ground zero -- 1,634 have been identified.
