ME: Man Found Hanged In Staten Island Jail Cell Committed Suicide
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A man found hanged in a Staten Island jail cell died from an apparent suicide, the New York City Medical Examiner's office has determined.
An autopsy was conducted and the cause of death was ruled a suicide.
The 57-year-old was found hanged in his jail cell late last week, after he was arrested when police caught him sleeping in a restaurant on Staten Island.
Police were dispatched around 10:45 p.m. Thursday to a restaurant at 1005 Castleton Ave. in the West New Brighton section of Staten Island.
The man was arrested for criminal trespass and resisting arrest, and taken to the 120th Precinct police station for processing.
Around 3:16 a.m. Friday, the man was found hanging from a belt in his cell at the police station lockup, police said.
The unidentified man was taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau has launched an investigation into the man's death.
