Mayor Booker To Deliver State Of City Address
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Newark Mayor Cory Booker will deliver his State of the City address Tuesday evening from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
The popular mayor previewed some topics that he will address in the annual speech before the Newark Star-Ledger's editorial board.
Booker will call for 50 new police officers to be added to the force and the creation of a civilian review board, he told the newspaper's editorial board.
The effort is in response to massive police layoffs in 2010 and widespread police misconduct, according to the paper.
"We want to get a citizen body to oversee police accountability," he told the editorial board.
Booker could be delivering his second-to-last State of the City address as he mulls a run for Senate in 2014. Longtime Sen. Frank Lautenberg announced earlier this year that he will retire at the end of his term.
As a result, Booker's speech could focus on his legacy in the city since he took office in 2006.
"It's been an incredibly painstaking, difficult seven years," Booker told the Star-Ledger's editorial board. "Despite it all, Newark is going through its biggest economic development boom since the 1950s."
Some had thought Booker would run against Gov. Chris Christie, but Booker decided instead to explore a run for Senate.
