Mateo Applauds Good Samaritans Who Stopped Bronx Cabbie Shooting Suspect
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The livery cab driver shot in the head Thursday night in the Bronx remains in critical condition, according to the head of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers.
NYSFTD President Fernando Mateo spoke to reporters Friday afternoon to provide an update on status of 64-year-old Julio Lora, who was shot by a passenger during an attempted robbery.
After speaking with Lora's family, Mateo said he was told the cabbie has "no movement...from the head down."
The suspect, 29-year-old Devon Taylor, allegedly took $71 from the cabbie before fleeing. However, Taylor was stopped and held down by a group of good Samaritans and was eventually taken into custody at the scene.
Mateo applauded the bravery of those who were able to stop the suspect and said the Federation of Taxi Drivers would offer them a $500 reward as a "small token of appreciation."
"We want to send a message that...when you do good things, good things come back to you," Mateo said.
Mateo went on to point out the individuals "put their life at risk to save another life."
"If all New Yorkers did what these people did, we would have a much better and a much safer city," he said.
Taylor was charged Friday with attempted murder, assault and robbery.
