Yankees' Teixeira Nursing Strained Right Wrist, To Miss WBC And At Least 2 Weeks
GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Yankees will have to do without Mark Teixeira for a little while.
The first baseman was supposed to be in the lineup for the United States in a World Baseball Classic exhibition against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, but was scratched due to a strained right wrist.
Teixeira underwent an MRI which revealed the strain. He was to head back to New York with team doctors to have the wrist looked at by a hand specialist on Wednesday, WFAN's Sweeny Murti reported.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Murti the injury has him concerned and that Teixeira will be out at least two weeks.
Teixeira tweeted the following on Tuesday night: 'Very disappointed to miss @WBCBaseball. Best of luck to my teammates, go #USA!'
The U.S. was preparing for its opener in the WBC on Friday night against Mexico by taking on the White Sox at Camelback Ranch.
The Rays' Ben Zobrist started at first base for the U.S. team. Twins catcher Joe Mauer can also play first base, though he got the start behind the plate against the White Sox.
Teixeira hit just .251 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs last season, the lowest home run and RBI totals of his career. He was limited to 123 games mainly due to injuries.
In other Yankees news, shortstop Derek Jeter could be able to play by March 10 as planned, though that's not a definite, reported Murti.
Closer Mariano Rivera could possibly pitch on Wednesday in the Yankees' exhibition game against the Dominican Republic. It would be his first exhibition-game action of the spring.
Teixeira is the latest Yankees star to be injured this spring. Curtis Granderson broke his forearm on Feb. 24.
