Mariano Rivera Says Yankee Stadium Farewell Was His Final Game
HOUSTON, T.X. (CBSNewYork) -- Mariano Rivera told reporters in Houston that Thursday's final appearance at Yankee Stadium was the last game of his glorious career.
The 43-year-old closer will not pitch during the Yankees' final series of the 2013 season at Minute Maid Park.
"I'm done, guys. I'm done," Rivera said. "I gave everything that I have. I think Thursday was the game that I left everything on the field."
"I think I squeezed every ounce of fuel that I have in my tank," Rivera said. "It's empty...I have nothing left."
Rivera also revealed that he had been pitching through "tremendous soreness" in his arm during the 2013 season. He declined to say how long he had been hurt.
"I don't want to tell you that," he said. "It's over."
Rivera had expressed his desire to play the outfield before retiring. Manager Joe Girardi said he wouldn't stop Rivera from playing the outfield, but Rivera's sore arm won't allow him to take the field again.
The legendary closer finishes his career with a record 652 saves. Rivera collected 44 saves in 2013 with a 2.11 ERA.
