Manhole Fire In Midtown Creates Traffic Mess, Causes Outages
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A manhole fire in Midtown left about 250 customers without power in Manhattan Friday afternoon and frustrated motorists.

The fire erupted on 59th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue and was later extinguished.

"It was a lot of smoke coming out of there and the lights started popping and all of a sudden, they just went out. The smoke increased,"one man told 1010 WINS' Terry Sheridan.
Road closures and shut downs around 59th Street right off 3rd Avenue jammed and snarled traffic. As of 10:30 p.m., all roads have been re-opened.
Con Edison said several underground feeders in the area were out of service, which may have caused the fires. The outages were spread throughout 22 buildings.
Power is expected to be restored sometime Friday night.
