Manhattan, Hampton Compete To Face Top-Seeded Kentucky
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- The challenge of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history will fall to either Manhattan or Hampton.
The winner of a First Four matchup between the Jaspers and Pirates will get unbeaten and top-ranked Kentucky in Louisville on Thursday.
Manhattan (19-13) upset regular season MAAC champion Iona 79-69 to earn the league's automatic bid for the second year in a row. The Jaspers gave Louisville a scare last season before falling 71-64.
Hampton (16-17) lost its top scorer and rebounder, Dwight Meikle, in its MEAC tournament opener. But the Pirates rallied for their first title since 2011.
The Pirates famously beat Iowa State as a No. 15 seed in 2001.
