Manhattan Doorman Accused Of Stealing Jewelry And Cash From Tenant

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Most tenants said they liked and trusted him, but not anymore.

A doorman, who worked at 200 East 62nd St., on the Upper East Side, is accused of going into one of his tenants' apartments and stealing more than $100,000 in jewelry and cash.

Jorge De Leon, 37, has since been arrested.

Police said the incident happened when the tenant left her apartment and went for a run. That's when the tenant's cleaning lady allegedly found De Leon hiding in a closet.

The woman who was victimized told police she lost her engagement ring, wedding set and thousands of dollars in cash.

"I'm shocked. I'm shocked," one tenant told 1010 WINS' Al Jones of the allegations.

The incident has also shaken the confidence of others.

"Of course everybody trusts everybody, but not anymore," one woman said.

While most of the folks who spoke with 1010 WINS' Jones at the building said they liked De Leon, not everyone did.

"I didn't like him. I was the only one," a tenant said.

De Leon is being held on $10,000 bond.
