Manfred With Boomer & Carton: 'I Would Leave The DH The Way It Is'
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Rob Manfred has said that he has no plans to implement the designated hitter in the National League, and the MLB commissioner reiterated his stance on Monday morning.
Speaking with WFAN co-hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton, the commish explained that having the DH in the American League -- but not in the National -- is in fact healthy for the game.
"I would leave the DH the way it is," Manfred told Boomer & Carton. "I always have thought that the variation between the two leagues is a good thing for the game, generally. It promotes debate among fans, and I'm a big believer that debate is a good thing for baseball. Just like debate's a good thing for your business.
"When people are talking about the game, it's good."
Rob Manfred
Does Manfred envision expansion in the next 10 years?
"I don't think any business can say they don't believe in expansion," he told the radio duo. "When you've got a healthy business that's going to continue to grow, I think you always have to be looking for opportunities to expand your footprint.
"Obviously there are geographical limitations in terms of what we can do because of the nature of our everyday -- essentially -- play ... But I think places like Mexico, the Caribbean, could support teams at some point down the road. And I think it would be a really good thing for the game."
Manfred and the guys also discussed Pete Rose, the future of gambling on baseball, Alex Rodriguez and much, much more.
