Man Shot, Wounded By Officer After Ramming Police Vehicle In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man was shot and wounded by police in Brooklyn on Thursday night after he allegedly refused to pull over and struck multiple cars before finally ramming an NYPD vehicle.
Around 7:30 p.m., gang squad officers saw the suspect run a red light at Avenue K and Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie in a black sport-utility vehicle, police said.
The officers tried to pull over the suspect, but he would not stop, and he hit several parked cars as he tried to flee, police said.
Police finally stopped the suspect in front of 1397 Rockaway Pkwy., but the suspect slammed into an NYPD vehicle as he stopped, police said.
An officer exiting his vehicle to report to work saw the incident and fired one round at the suspect, striking him in the left shoulder, police said.
The officer was recently reassigned to Brooklyn as part of the city's Summer All Out campaign, which takes officers away from desk duty and puts them out on patrol in high-crime areas.
Police identified the suspect as Raymond Martinez, 46. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital in police custody.
No officers were injured, police said.
