Man Shot Dead In Queens; 9-Day Homicide-Free Streak Officially Broken
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The streak of days without a New York City murder was officially broken Saturday evening, when a man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in Elmhurst, Queens.
Around 6 p.m. Saturday, Jahim Campbell, 24, was found bleeding with a gunshot wound at 97-28 57th Ave. in Queens, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made in the case.
Before Campbell's death, the last confirmed homicide was a double-slaying in the Bronx on Jan. 16.
There were also questions about the death of a woman in her 40s at 1202 Union St. in Brooklyn at 6:20 a.m. Friday. Autopsy results for the woman were not immediately available from the New York City Medical Examiner's office, police told 1010 WINS.
Many credited the brutally cold weather with the lack of brutal behavior for nine days. John in Crown Heights was saying how much he hated the cold until he heard the homicide statistic.
"Hopefully it stays like this until, you know, spring comes into full effect," he said Saturday. "I'd rather deal with the cold than the murder rates."
Meanwhile, police Commissioner Ray Kelly did not seem convinced Friday that the frigid weather was the reason for the lack of homicides in the city.
"You know that's always, that's sort of the anecdotal answer that we have in policing the cold weather or rain... sometimes yes, sometimes no," Kelly told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb. "It's always a complex issue. It's difficult to point to any one factor. But we're happy it's what it is."
"We've seen it where people who are forced to be inside as a result of the weather get violent," he said.
