Man Shot After Pursuit By New Jersey State Troopers
BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The New Jersey attorney general's office has opened an investigation after a man was shot and wounded by state troopers in Brick Township following a pursuit early Wednesday.
The events unfolded when troopers tried to stop 30-year-old Michael Zaun, of Delanco, for a moving violation on Route 29 in West Trenton around 12:30 a.m., police said.
Zaun took off on Interstate 195 with troopers in pursuit and apparently fired a gun at the officers through the sunroof of his SUV, officials said.
An on-board video camera in a trooper's car captured what appear to be multiple muzzle flashes from a gun just above the Nissan Pathfinder's roof and one of the troopers can be heard saying that they are being shot at, the attorney general's office said.
Zaun eventually pulled the vehicle onto the front lawn of a Carolina Avenue house in Brick Township and ran to the front door, police said.
The troopers shouted at Zaun to get on the ground but he did not obey them, the attorney general's office said.
A trooper then opened fire and struck Zaun in the arm and upper body, officials said.
None of the three troopers involved in the incident were injured.
Zaun is being treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries at Jersey Shore Medical Center, police said.
His vehicle has been impounded. State police have applied for a warrant to search the vehicle for a gun.
Zaun's vehicle was apparently involved in a police pursuit earlier in the evening in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, police said.
No charges have been filed.
The investigation is ongoing.
