Man Indicted For Alleged Attempted Murder With Blow Torch
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 35-year-old man accused of trying to murder his wife and former boss by setting them on fire was indicted Wednesday, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. announced.
According to the charges, Carlos Diaz met his wife on January 16 after a recent separation in an Inwood parking lot and asked her to get into his van. After she refused, he allegedly sprayed her with lighter fluid and used a blow torch to ignite flames that injured her face, neck and hands.
Investigators say that Diaz then fled the parking lot and drove to a nearby mechanic shop on 10th Avenue where he had previously worked. He allegedly took a gas can from his van and spread the flammable liquid around his former employer's office and on his ex-boss. After a lighter malfunction, Diaz drove to the 34th Precinct where he was arrested.
Diaz was charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, assault, and attempted assault.
