Man Found Guilty Of Fatally Stabbing Wife In Midtown Hair Salon
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A jury has convicted a Brooklyn man of stabbing his wife to death in a midtown Manhattan hair salon two years ago.
Michael Kenny, 44, was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder and aggravated criminal contempt in the March 2011 stabbing.
Prosecutors said Kenny stabbed 40-year-old Denise Kelly multiple times in the chest, leg, hand, and forearm in the second floor bathroom of the West 35th Street hair salon where she worked.
After the attack, he stole cash from the salon's register and fled to Brooklyn where he stole a van from his employer, prosecutors said.
He was arrested the next day in Maryland after leading police on a five-mile chase.
According to court documents, Kenny had a prior conviction for threatening and assaulting his wife, and for violating orders of protection.
"Domestic violence doesn't exclusively happen in the home – in many cases, it overflows into other areas of a person's life, including the workplace," said District Attorney Cyrus Vance. "This defendant violently stabbed his wife to death in the bathroom of the salon where she worked. My Office will continue to combat domestic violence not only by aggressively prosecuting offenders, but also by ensuring that victims have access to comprehensive care and services."
Kenny is expected to be sentenced on March 28.
