Man Declared Brain Dead After Being Discovered Injured In Union Square
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been declared brain dead, after being found lying on a bench in Union Square Park with severe injuries to his head and face.
Police found the 28-year-old man shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the park near Union Square East and East 14th Street, police said.
The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was declared brain dead, police said.
Family members said the man had a history of seizures, and it is possible that his injuries came from a fall, CBS 2 reported.
Police said in published reports that an assault was also being considered as a possibility. The New York City Medical Examiner's office will determine the man's cause of death once he passes away, police said.
The front part of the park was cordoned off by police following the discovery, according to a Gothamist report. A witness reported seeing a trail of blood proceeding up the handicap along the east side of Union Square, the publication reported.
