Man Convicted In Robbery, Shooting That Left Teen Dead In Irvington, New Jersey
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was convicted of murder and other charges Monday, in a 2012 shooting that left a 16-year-old boy dead in Irvington, New Jersey.
Marquise Hawkins, 20, of Newark was convicted by an Essex County, New Jersey jury Monday felony murder, robbery, conspiracy and weapons offenses in the murder of Khalil Williams of Irvington, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.
Hawkins was found guilty of 12 counts he faced, and acquitted of one weapons offense, following a trial before Superior Court Judge Alfonse J. Cifelli.
Prosecutors said on Feb. 17, 2012, Hawkins and three others were driving around Irvington with two loaded handguns and robbing people. When they reached the intersection of Orange Avenue and Orange Place, they saw Williams and three other teens walking home, prosecutors said.
Hawkins and his alleged accomplices circled the block, came back, and robbed the victims at gunpoint, prosecutors said.
Hawkins stayed in the car, but ordered his co-defendants to shoot, prosecutors said. Williams died of his injuries.
"Robbery is bad enough but this case turned into a homicide when Hawkins told the two accomplices, who jumped out of the car, to shoot,'' Assistant Prosecutor Justin Edwab said in a news release. "These were innocent kids who were just walking home.''
Two co-defendants – Haroon Perry, 23, and Azim Brogsdale, 19, of Newark – were awaiting trial as of Monday. A fourth alleged conspirator has not been charged, prosecutors said.
Hawkins is to be sentenced May 8.
