Father, 2-Year-Old Son, Shot At Herbert Von King Park In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for a second suspect in connection with the shooting of a toddler and his father in Brooklyn.
The shooting occurred at around 2 p.m. at Herbert Von King Park, originally named Tompkins Park, in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
The man and his 2-year-old son were grazed by the bullets, and a total of three shots were fired, according to authorities.
The father is believed to be the target of the shooting, police said.
When two suspects saw the father, one of them said, 'That's him' and began shooting, CBS 2′s Sean Hennessey reported.
The father held his son and dashed into this community center. Three shots were fired outside the center, one fired inside. The father was hit in the hand and his son was shot in both arms.
"I heard some gunshots rang out. And I saw a few people, they were on the go, they was moving pretty fast," witness Isaac Mickens told Hennessey.
"I saw cops running. I saw a baby -- cops carrying the kid to the ambulance. They took the kid right away," witness Derick Martinez told Hennessey.
One suspect is in custody. Dozens of police officers searched a building where the second suspect may be hiding.
They are also searching for the weapon used in the shooting.
Both the man and the boy are listed in stable condition at Kings County Hospital, deputy NYPD Commissioner Paul Browne told WCBS 880.
"This shooting was so close to the police station nearby that a detective who heard the shots looked out the window and actually saw one of the suspects fleeing out of the park," Browne said.
That suspect has been caught by police. However, police continue to search for the second suspect in the shooting.
Lafayette Avenue remains closed.
Today is the boy's 2nd birthday.
