Man Charged In 2 Subway Slashings In Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a pair of slashing attacks on subway trains in Brooklyn this week.
Shawn Howard, 28, of the Bronx, was charged with three counts each of assault and criminal use of a weapon, police said.
He was apprehended around 8:10 p.m. Thursday by uniformed NYPD officers assigned to the Brooklyn Transit Impact Unit, who recognized him from a wanted photo they had received earlier in the day, police said.
Police arrested Howard without incident at the corner of Broadway and Patchen Avenue in Brooklyn, the NYPD said.
During a search, the officers – Officer Travis Warfield and Sgt. Brian Rabbitte – found a razor blade, and he was subsequently linked to the two slashing incidents, police said.
Around 6:15 p.m. Monday, the 19-year-old victim was sitting on an outbound C Train near the Utica Avenue station in Bedford-Stuyvesant, when the suspect walked up to him for no apparent reason and slashed him on the right side of the face, police said.
The suspect then hopped of the train, police said.
The victim was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was treated and released, police said.
Around 1 a.m. Tuesday, a 21-year-old woman was headed toward Manhattan in an overnight local A Train that had just pulled into the Nostrand Avenue stop, also in Bedford-Stuyvesant, police said.
She was approached by a man wearing a white and black hooded sweat shirt who said, "I don't like you!" and slashed her in the right side of the face, police said. He ran off the train before the doors closed, police said.
Police said another female victim was also attacked while on a C Train on an unknown date. Howard had not been charged in that attack Friday night.
